An old board doesn’t fail politely. Fuse wire will carry a fault current far longer than a modern breaker, & a shared safety switch means one problem takes out the lights, the fridge & the internet at the same time.

It also quietly blocks things you might want later. Most solar & EV quotes that fall over in Adelaide fall over at the board, & you usually find out the day the installer turns up.
